Common Misinterpretations
High alcohol/drug composite scores indicate treatment need more than other domains
The ASI's power is in identifying ALL domains needing attention. A patient with moderate substance scores but severe psychiatric scores may need mental health stabilization first. Treat the full profile.
The ASI-Lite composite scores can be compared across domains
Composite scores are calculated differently for each domain and cannot be directly compared. A 0.5 in medical is not equivalent to a 0.5 in legal. Each domain has its own clinical meaning.
The ASI-Lite is too long for clinical use
The ASI-Lite is a shortened version (30-45 minutes vs. 60-90 for full ASI). The comprehensive information gathered saves time in treatment planning and prevents missed problems that derail treatment.
Follow-up ASI scores should be compared to intake scores
The ASI asks about both lifetime and recent (30-day) problems. Lifetime scores won't change. Track recent/30-day composite scores for treatment progress monitoring.
