About Safety Planning
Safety planning is an evidence-based practice developed by Dr. Barbara Stanley and Dr. Gregory Brown. Research shows that having a written safety plan can reduce suicide risk by helping people recognize warning signs and take action before a crisis escalates.
Tips for your safety plan:
- Keep a copy somewhere easily accessible (phone, wallet, bedside)
- Share your plan with someone you trust
- Review and update it regularly with your therapist or doctor
- Practice using the coping strategies when you're feeling okay
